Tried, trusted & dachshund friendly
These are the foods and supplies we personally use with our dogs and confidently recommend to our puppy families.

What we feed our puppies
We feed our puppies Purina Pro Plan Puppy Chicken & Rice Formula. It is made for puppies under one year old, with chicken as the first ingredient and DHA to support brain and vision development.
Keeping your puppy on the same food during the transition to a new home can help maintain a familiar routine. If you decide to change foods later, we recommend making the change gradually.
We participate in a professional affiliate program with Purina. When you purchase through our referral link, Southern Idaho Dachshunds may earn discounts, loyalty points to redeem for merchandise and/or gift cards, or other compensation at no additional cost to you. We only recommend products we personally use, trust or believe may be helpful to dachshund families.
Offers, eligibility and pricing are determined by Purina and may change.
A product we use
This is the plaque and tartar remover kit we use with all of our dogs. Our photo shows it being used with one of our dachshunds. The kit includes a powered dental tool and dental accessories. Visit the Amazon listing for the manufacturer’s product details and instructions.
Ask your veterinarian whether this type of tool is appropriate for your dog. It is not a replacement for veterinary dental care.

View on AmazonWe look for products that fit a dachshund’s size and body shape, support safe everyday routines, and have worked well in our own home and breeding program. We prioritize practical items that can help puppy families with feeding, training, travel, grooming and protecting a dachshund’s long back.
Every dog is different. Please choose the correct size, supervise use, and ask your veterinarian about food, supplements or health-related products for your individual puppy.

Dachshund education
The dachshund was developed to be a courageous, functional hunting dog. Its distinctive shape should always support soundness, balance and efficient movement.
Low to the ground, long in body, short of leg and well-muscled—without appearing weak, clumsy or restricted.
A balanced outline matters more than exaggeration. The front, rear and topline should work together as a functional whole.
The chest should provide heart and lung room, while the shoulder and upper arm support reach and stability.
A firm, level topline and strong body help the dachshund move with endurance and purpose.
Strong, well-muscled hindquarters provide drive. The rear should track in balance with the front.
The ideal dachshund is clever, lively and courageous, with a confident and friendly manner.
Breed standards are best understood with hands-on learning and the complete official standard. This page is an educational overview, not a substitute for the official AKC Dachshund breed standard.
A confident start
Simple routines, safe handling and patient training help a young dachshund become a confident family companion.
Set up a comfortable crate or pen, remove small hazards, block unsafe stairs and keep household routines calm at first.
Discourage jumping from furniture, use safe ramps when appropriate and support both the chest and rear when lifting.
Continue the puppy’s familiar food and schedule initially. Make any food transition slowly and monitor body condition.
Use short, rewarding sessions for house training, name recognition, recall and comfortable crate time.
Introduce new people, surfaces, sounds and experiences gradually while respecting your veterinarian’s vaccination guidance.
Establish care with your veterinarian promptly and bring all vaccination, deworming and microchip records.
